Would a Black Murder Suspect Get Champagne?

Randy Shawbyline‚ Aug. 22‚ 2006

As parents of American soldiers killed in Iraq ponder the contrast between their child’s anonymity and the media frenzy surrounding JonBenet Ramsay’s ten-year old death, a new question emerges: would an African-American who has confessed to murdering a child be given champagne and fried prawns while traveling to court? John M. Karr, the white confessor to Ramsay’s murder, was served such food while flying from Bangkok to Denver. Whereas a Black suspect would be handcuffed, seated with the baggage if possible, and given a hard roll and water, Karr flew business class and was allowed to drink beer and chardonnay with his main course of fried prawns. Think of Karr’s treatment the next time someone claims the American justice system is color-blind.
