Pelosi, Baseball and Jon Stewart ...Oct. 19‚ 2007To the Editor -- I read with some small satisfaction (I've been going on fumes for 7 years; gimme a break!) your article about Pelosi standing up to the Heedless War-Profiteers. Doesn't it just figure that in the Age of Viagra, the person with an Existential Pair is a chick? Frances Goff Angry Kucinich Voter Hey Randy, For the record, the reason the [Cleveland] Indians won the American League Pennant in 1948 was because I sent a Jewish (Good-Luck Charm) muzzuzah to their General Manager, Hank Greenberg before the start of the season! They also had a rookie 3rd baseman, Al"Flip"Rosen, who later was the G.M. for the Giants. Even though Rosen came in 2nd in the voting for the 1950 All-Star game, Casey Stengel picked his own Yankee player who came in 3rd,Gil McDougal. I wrote a letter to Greenberg, complaining about it... and Hank wrote back, "that Rosen was young, and will get many more opportunities to play in future All-Star games". Sure enough, in the 1954 All-Star game, Rosen hit 2 homers and had 5 RBI's. What I did not know, Greenberg was left off the All-Star Roster in the late 30's, even though he had 100 RBI's at the mid-season All-Star break. However a few "unknown" first baseman's were picked ahead of him, Jimmy Foxx and Lou Gahrig. I got to meet Hank in 1981 when he dedicated 2 grandstand seats at the old Washington Sq. Bar and Grill. Jerry Pritikin P.S. ANYONE WANT TO BUY SOME CUBS MEMORABILIA? I share many of the same observations Randy Shaw made about The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. I have actually admired Jon Stewart's ability to engage respectfully with right-wing guests on his program. I certainly don't expect Stewart to only provide air-time to liberals and progressives. But, I keep hoping that Stewart will see fit to give a megaphone to those who do not already have one! He has done this on occasion, but recent guests Vicente Fox, Lynne Cheney and Tony Snow, in contrast, have plenty of access to mainstream media and are hardly starved for publicity. It would be great to see, for example, someone like Medea Benjamin on The Daily Show. This is especially true since Stewart recently took shots at CodePINK. Why not have one of them on the show to explain themselves? Why not invite guests like Kevin Danaher? He has several books out, is very articulate, and has been shut out of mainstream media. Stewart has failed to have even more high-profile authors on his show. Susan Faludi, Naomi Klein, and Amy Goodman are just some examples of best-selling authors Stewart has ignored. I have always had a problem with the glaring gender disparity that exists on Jon Stewart's program. His ratio of male-to-female guests is about 20 to 1, and most of his female guests are Hollywood celebrities and not authors or pundits.
