Poll Reveals Voters Expect Presidents to Pander

Randy Shawbyline‚ Nov. 15‚ 2007

According to this week’s New York Times/CBS News poll, 80% of Iowa Democrats feel that Hillary Clinton is prepared enough for the job of President, while only 42% believe that about Barack Obama. Yet on the question of whether a candidate says what they believe most of the time, or instead say what people want to hear, Obama prevailed over Clinton by an 82%-47% margin. Combining the two results, voters think Clinton is better prepared for the White House because she is far more willing than Obama to say what she thinks people want to hear, rather than what she really believes. In other words, Iowa voters expect a President who is skilled at pandering to voters, rather than standing up for what they believe.
