District 9 Candidate on the Ellis Act

Paul Hogarthbyline‚ Aug. 13‚ 2008

EDITOR'S NOTE: Eva Royale issued a follow-up e-mail after this piece first appeared explaining that the e-mail was unauthorized, which we have republished at the bottom after the fold.

When it comes to politically absurd arguments, Supervisor candidate Eva Royale takes the cake. Royale, who has Mayor Gavin Newsom’s endorsement in the District 9 race, sent out an e-mail yesterday to members of the Democratic County Central Committee. She asked to clarify her position on the Ellis Act, a state law that allows landlords to “go out of business” by evicting tenants. “I do support the Ellis Act,” she wrote, “and I do not support the repeal of the Ellis Act. As a long time renter in San Francisco, I have personally benefited from the Ellis Act and appreciate how important it is to protect the rights of renters in our city.” District 9 includes the Mission - where many working class renters have lost their homes due to the Ellis Act, including senior Jose Morales - none of whom would say they “personally benefited” from that experience. The DCCC will vote tonight at 7:00 p.m. on endorsements.
